Study Medicine in Egypt
Egypt is home to some of the Middle East and North Africa's longest-established public universities, several with large medical, nursing and health-science faculties. The Egyptian Ministry of Higher Education runs a national "Study in Egypt" platform to support international applicants. Recognition, language of instruction and admission requirements vary by university and faculty, so Bridgeway looks at these individually with each student.
Why study in Egypt
What makes Egypt worth considering
Long-established medical faculties
Several of the public medical faculties we feature date back to the early-to-mid 20th century (Kasr Al Ainy's roots go back to 1827), with large teaching hospitals attached to each.
A national platform for international applicants
Egypt's Ministry of Higher Education runs the "Study in Egypt" platform specifically to make applying to Egyptian public universities more accessible for international students.
Established international and regional student communities
Egyptian medical faculties have hosted students from across Africa, the Middle East and South Asia for decades, alongside domestic students.
More than one relevant pathway at some universities
A few of the universities we feature offer more than one health-science pathway — for example Medicine alongside Nursing — not just a single Medicine faculty.
Recognition and language arrangements vary
Recognition of an Egyptian medical degree, and the language used for teaching, differ by university and by programme. Bridgeway checks the current position for your specific situation before you commit to an application.

Student life
Studying and living in Egypt
Living costs in Egypt are generally lower than in the UK, though exact costs depend heavily on city, lifestyle and accommodation choice — see our Fees & Living Costs page for general guidance on what to budget for.
Cairo, Alexandria and Port Said offer quite different environments — a large capital city, a historic Mediterranean coastal city, and a smaller canal city respectively — worth weighing up alongside the university itself.
As with any move abroad, students should prepare for a period of adjustment — a different language, climate and culture from home. Bridgeway's pre-departure guidance is designed to help with this transition.
FAQs
Common questions about studying medicine in Egypt
It varies by university and programme. Some Egyptian medical faculties offer English-medium tracks or components aimed at international students, while others teach primarily in Arabic. Bridgeway confirms the current language arrangement for your specific programme before you apply — please treat any general claim about "English-taught" Egyptian medicine with caution until it's been checked for your chosen university.
Egyptian Medicine (MBBCh) programmes are generally structured as around five years of academic study followed by a one-year supervised internship, though exact structures can vary by university — we confirm the current structure for the university you're considering.
Recognition depends on the regulator in the country where you intend to practise, and this can change over time. We strongly recommend checking current recognition and registration requirements with the relevant regulator for your home country (for example the GMC in the UK or the NMC in India) before applying — Bridgeway does not guarantee recognition and can help point you to the right official sources.
Not officially. "MBBS" is the degree title used in the UK, India and much of the Commonwealth. Egyptian universities award the equivalent qualification under its own local title, MBBCh (Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery) — the same core qualification by a different name. We use "MBBCh" when describing the actual degree, and mention "MBBS" only because it's the term many students search for.
Many international applicants to Egyptian public universities apply via the Ministry of Higher Education's "Study in Egypt" platform, alongside any university-specific steps. Bridgeway guides you through both.
No. Admission decisions are made solely by the university based on its own entry requirements and assessment of your application. Bridgeway supports you through the process — from eligibility review to documentation — but cannot guarantee an outcome.
